Kigoma Region praises APRM's Country Review Process

The APRM Country Review Team continues its country assessment tour in the regions, where Kigoma Region was today’s stop. The 9 member team led by Prof. Adelle Jinadu of Nigeria, spent the day engaging in interactive sessions with Kigoma region governance stakeholders and non-state stakeholders.

On his opening remarks, the Kigoma District Commissioner, Mr. John Mongella, said this process marked as the first time for Kigoma region to engage in such a remarkable discussion on good governance.

“Good governance in today’s world is one of the fundamental prerequisites for better development of our people and Nations at large,” said Mr. Mongella, while reading the speech on behalf of Hon. LT. (Rtd.) Issa S. Machibya, the Kigoma Regional Commissioner who was away on an official trip to Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.

Mr. Mongella said Kigoma region prides itself in good governance practice in social, political and socio-economic improvement. “Politically, we have realized a steady development and maturation of democracy in 2010 General Election showing transparency to all participants that are Presidential, Members of the Parliament and ward Councilor,” said Mr. Mongella.

An example of 2010 General Election results showed 52.7% voted CCM, 42.6% voted CHADEMA and the remaining 4.7% voted for NCCR Mageuzi and other registered parties.
The results show a democratic process with a balance picture that citizens had utilized their due process rights in political fairness arena, said Mr. Mongella.

In socio-economic front, Mr. Mongella said that Kigoma have significantly stride in social services such as education, health, water and housing sanitation in an effort to improve the standard of the livelihood of people. Mr. Mongella added that “a number of savings and credit cooperative societies have been established in order to enable ease financial access and boost the small businesses in the region”.

Mr. Mongella closed his remarks by calling participants to fully engage in discussion because the assessment process will “help us recognize both superlative practice and challenges which require to be worked upon in order to advance standard and good governance, especially on new constitutional review process.”
