Tanzanian musicians will be entertaining festivalgoers at the Jahazi Literary and Jazz Festival in Stone Town, Zanzibar, on 2-4 September.
Local artists Mim Suleiman,Jaiza Bongo, Safar, The Big 5 and Said are joining fellow international artists Moussa Diallo, Al Campos, Mohamed Jabry at the festival.
Zanzibari born songstress, Mim Suleiman, said: "I am very proud to be to a be part of the Jahazi festival. I am so looking forward to be performing in Zanzibar and to see all those amazing smiley faces again. It brings a great comfort to know that I can touch their souls...They always touch mine."
Zanzibar’s President will open the festival – which is a first of its kind in Zanzibar - at an official ceremony held in the Old Fort, alongside the former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Lord Malloch Brown, on 2 September.
The President said: “I believe this festival will raise awareness on importance of people’s culture, democracy, respect for human rights and better management of Africa’s resources.”
The festival has also attracted writers Jeffrey Allen, Haji Gorah Haji, Tishani Doshi, Gillian Slovo and Tim Severin who will be hold writing workshops; readings, discussions and signings of their books.
Zanzibari writer, minstrel and poet Haji Gora Haji –who will be doing a poetry reading and children’s story telling at the festival - said: “No-one should feel tired to learn, because education is important. I would have contributed even more to my society if I had gone to school.”
