Local tennis coach Majaliwa Majuto offers technique to junior athletes during a training session at Kijitonyama Tenns Club last
A total SEVENTY two tennis young stars are expected to compete for ranking points when the first season of Gold Star Open Junior Tennis event kicks off at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club on Saturday the September 24.
The two day tournament that climax on Sunday September 25th will attract participation of players aged between six and 18 from three regions of Morogoro, Coast and host Dar es Salaam. They will be classed in five different age categories namely 18 & Under, 14 & Under, 12 & Under, 10 & Under as well as 8 & Under .
The event is organized by the Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA) in collaboration with Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Tennis section on behalf of sole sponsor Gold Star Paints.
Registration closes on Friday evening ready for the kickoff, and we would like to ask parents guardians to be cautious of the exact age of their competing young athletes especially now that we are focusing towards improving the playing ground.
In the past we have experienced complain from a section of parents to the effect that their young athletes were fielded against elderly players, and this is a situation we would like to avoid by allowing only players that share the same age category to play one another. As such, only players whose birth date is between 1993 and 2003 are eligible to participate.
We would like to express our satisfaction that the levels of competition is on the high as indicated by the increasing numbers and good performance in recent local and regional events. Parents have been a huge support to this by sending their children to tennis centers, and we are really grateful to them.
The entire tennis development team at the TTA is committed to improve the levels especially on junior players as we seek to develop a foundation of talented players that can compete at higher levels of the game of tennis. We kindly invite your support to this and other ongoing development initiatives.
