Radio Mbao This Week

As year 2010 is an election year in Tanzania, the discussion on and around the Tanzania's democratic process is important.

Democracy is a political system in which people have an opportunity to voice their wish in selecting a person to run the affairs of the state. That wish, obviously, is expressed through a vote.

In Tanzania, however, there is a scary reality. For instance, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) holds primaries through which party cadres select their candidates for the elections.

However, if a candidate chosen by party members is not liked by the party leadership, their votes are overruled and the one favored by the party leadership gets nominated. That brings into question the validity of the democratic process as it is practiced in Tanzania. The show will focus on whether democracy in Tanzania is just an illusion.

Our guest will be Kennedy Opulukwa, a prominent political affairs contributor to the BBC, Voice of America and Radio Mbao.
