Mzungu
Kichaa means “the crazy white man”, a name that raises many questions
if you aren’t familiar with the artist. Mzungu Kichaa is considered a
pioneer of Tanzanian Bongo Flava, one of the biggest genres in the
region. His socially conscious single and video Jitolee (2009) took
Tanzania by storm and reached number one on the East African Charts soon
after it was released. The video has reached well over a hundred
thousand views on YouTube. In Europe he won “Best Upcoming Artist” at
the African Achievement Awards immediately after releasing his debut
album Tuko Pamoja in 2009. His new release HUSTLE has
received good reviews, including a feature in the Guardian UK as well
as a nomination at the Danish Music Awards in the category “best world
track”. The release includes his first recordings in english, and the
hits Twende Kazi and African Hustle.
The
London performance is part of his “unplugged” tour, which has included a
visit to Jazz Ahead in Bremen, a concert in his birth town Skanderborg
and a concert at the prestigious SPOT festival in Aarhus, where he
received a standing ovation in Aarhus Musikhus for his showcase. The
artist will also be doing a performance in The Hague in Holland, before
heading to Tanzania.
With
his inspiring, socially and politically engaged lyrics, clean vocals
and impressive guitar playing, it becomes just about the music.
