JUNIOR tennis athletes will be treated to a splendid two day tennis experience when the inaugural Century Insurance Open Junior Tennis Championship 2010 kicks off next week at the Kijitonyama Tennis Club.

The event is expected to attract over 100 junior tennis players aged between five and 18 from four regions namely Arusha, Morogoro, Coast and host Dar es Salaam with top players including local top seed Ibrahim Shabani as well as rising star Sarah Bura participating.

While advanced players in the 18 & Under category will be vying for a place in the national team that is destined for the ITF / CAT 18 & Under tournament slated for Burundi and Rwanda next month, the 45 junior recruits currently training at the club are expected to get a feel of competitive tennis.

And Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA) looks forward to the event, calling for tennis enthusiasts from across the country to gear up for a spirited performance saying it (the event) would provide athletes with the perfect atmosphere to test their grip after months of training.

The association’s Secretary General Inger Njau said in Dar es Salaam that the event comes just in time to gauge the national 18 & Under team’s game ahead of their much anticipated feet in Burundi and Rwanda.

The seemingly happy Inger commented on the generous generosity from sole sponsor Century Insurance Tanzania, saying it was through such kind generosity from the corporate community that the sport of tennis was gaining grounds in the country.

Inger was in high spirits when she said: “We are looking forward to this event. Apart from kids networking and socializing in a purely tennis environment, the event will provide the perfect opportunity for the 18 & Under team to gauge their game. We are happy that Century Insurance Tanzania came out with this generous support.”

She said such hefty sponsorship will go a long way into impacting on the recently launched ‘Tennis for Life’ project at the club, which is working on a junior tennis development program gearing to become a high performance tennis centre in the East African region.

Inger said: “We cannot forget to mention the ongoing tennis for life project at the club which will be greatly boosted. Our association is looking at Kijitonyama Tennis Club as a high performance tennis centre and the event will greatly boost the efforts already underway towards this goal.”
